The contest is an annual event sponsored by The Friends of the Monrovia Public Library which was established in 1957 and helps raise funds to support the enhancement and expansion of library services.

For the fifth year in a row we have hosted the library’s annual Summer Reading Club Bookmark Contest. These winning designs have been printed and are available to patrons in the Library. We gave the Mayor and City Council a copy of each bookmark and thank the city for honoring their creative achievements and participation in our annual bookmark contest.

The Friends were delighted to introduce five of our winners who are shown with members of the Monrovia City Council and FOMPL President Karen Hollinhurst.

From the 0 to 5 year old age category:
Penelope Vuong (age 4) who designed the bookmark Flower Garden.
Sayaka Kodama (age 5) who designed the bookmark Reading is Magical.

From the 6 to 8 year old age category:
Kaitlyn Molinar (age 9) who designed the bookmark Spring Time.

From the 9 to 11 year old age category:
Desiree Cooper (age 11) who designed the Dream UpAdventures bookmark

From the Adult category:

The Friends Board is anxious to reopen our collectable book store on Amazon. However, we need additional volunteers! As we identify books for potential listing on line, someone must confirm that determination, set a reasonable price,  and post the books on the website with a brief description. When items are sold, they must be packaged carefully and shipped. Work can be done at any time the Library is open!

Interested volunteers should contact the Volunteer Coordinator at the Monrovia Public Library.

So many entries this year! So many excellent entries this year! An adjunct to the Summer Reading Club, the bookmark contest was open to all students of Monrovia schools. The expanded advertising brought in more than double the entrants - thus double the number of winners! Great artists include

Angel Kwinn-Greene  (age 3),  Ariel Yao  (age 4), Emma Jay Young (age 7) Ava Baluyut (age 7), Deanna Pham (age 9), Sophia Thomas (age 10), Rebecca Lauver (age 12) , Heidi Durant (age 16), Crystal Serrano (adult), and Elizabeth Young  (adult).

That's  10 (rather than the usual 5) winners' newly printed bookmarks in the Friends Store next week.   We'll first get them to the winners, then make then available to the public.

Yes, the winners get to see them first. Not only will they receive 40 bookmarks for friends and family, they are also given $15 in FOMPL Book Bucks to spend in the Friends Store.

Congratulations to all the winners!

Each year, the Friends sponsor a book mark contest during the Library's Summer Reading Club. This year's winners have just been announced - four highly creative youngsters who love to read. Each winner received 50 bookmarks and $15 in Friends Book Bucks which can be used to purchase books and media from the Friends Store. These bookmarks are now available to the general public.

We look forward to seeing all of the winners continue as readers and artists!

Books, books, everywhere.....

Don't like reading? Read on...An interesting post. Just because you don’t enjoy reading a good book, doesn’t mean there aren’t many other uses for all of those books piled up in the attic.  Here are photos of a desk at Delft University made of used books.  Typesmith.com shows artistic and occasionally bizarre re-purposed books.

What to do with those extra books.

First, consider donating them to the Friends of the Monrovia Public Library. Recycling at its best! The Friends take your books and sell them inexpensively. You can get a charity tax deduction for the donation; do ask for a receipt. The money raised goes right back to the Library for programs and services.  Everything stays right here in town. However, if you're looking for a more unusual reuse, check out "80 Awesome Ideas for All Your Old or Unwanted Books"
